Getting an air fryer absolutely changed the game for me. It makes cooking so easy and is so much faster than cooking on a stove or in the oven.

I’ve cooked chicken breasts in the air fryer a thousand times, and thought it was about time to try out another form of meat. I personally love turkey burgers, so thought I’d try it out!

These turned out amazing and not only do they taste just as great as turkey burgers on the grill or stovetop, but they are also super easy to make and are ready in 12 minutes or less.

Plus, it’s a pretty bare bones recipe. No breadcrumbs, no egg, just ground turkey and a few spices to make these burgers super flavorful and complex.

I recommend pairing these with some sesame burger buns, sliced tomato, lettuce, mayo and other condiments of choice. But, switch it up and add some toppings you personally love!

Ingredients for Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

These air fryer turkey burgers are super simple, which is why I love them so much. I usually just need to pick up ground turkey, and I have the rest of the ingredients on hand.

  • Ground turkey
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Italian seasoning

I personally use 93% lean ground turkey for this recipe. You can always use a different fat percentage based on preference as well! I like using 93% lean because I think it’s just enough fat to add flavor and moisture, but not enough to feel overly oily or rich.

Here are a few examples of toppings I feel like would pair really well with these turkey burgers:

  • Tomato
  • Avocado
  • Red onion
  • Lettuce
  • Bacon or turkey bacon
  • Grilled peppers
  • Grilled onions
  • Pickles

As for condiments, you can add mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, honey mustard or anything else you may like!

Are turkey burgers healthier than beef burgers?

It really depends on your personal goals and needs. In general turkey burgers are going to be a healthier option because they are lower in fat, especially saturated fat which can raise the “bad” cholesterol, LDL.

But, you can always make beef burgers using 93% lean ground beef. In this case, the nutrition may be pretty similar. So let’s compare!

Three ounces of 93% lean ground turkey contains about 180 calories, 23 grams of protein and 2.5 grams of saturated fat. It’s a good source of B vitamins, zinc and selenium.

Three ounces of 93% lean ground beef contains about 163 calories, 23 grams of protein and 3 grams of saturated fat. It is also a good source of B vitamins, zinc and selenium.

So in general, the difference isn’t that huge when you compare 93% lean ground beef or ground turkey. But, while 93% lean ground turkey is not too expensive, 93% can definitely be on the pricier side. If price is a concern, ground turkey is definitely the best option.

Tip: Press the burgers down so they are thin and cook faster (and more evenly)!

How to make Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

These air fryer turkey burgers are super easy to make. In just a few simple steps (and a few minutes) these turkey burgers will be ready to go!

Step 1: Combine raw ground turkey, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and italian seasoning in a medium sized bowl. Mix until spices are evenly distributed.

Step 2: Divide the ground turkey into 4 evenly sized pieces. Form into patties with your hands.

Step 3: On a flat surface, press the turkey burgers as flat as possible with the bottom of a bowl or plate.

Step 4: Add a light layer of cooking oil to the bottom of the air fryer. Place turkey burgers in the air fryer and cook for 12 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

As you can see, these burgers are super easy to make! I personally like flattening them out before cooking them so they cook as evenly as possible and the outside doesn’t get too dried out and hard.

What temperature should turkey burgers be?

You always want to cook turkey burgers to the internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. This is to kill any of the bacteria that may cause food borne illness if ingested.

I always use a food thermometer when cooking raw meats. This ensures the meat is fully cooked and also ensures I don’t overcook it!

I usually check my turkey burgers eight minutes into cooking them. If they are above 165 degrees Fahrenheit, I will take them out. If not, I’ll check them again at 10 minutes, and then at 12 minutes.

Depending on how thick the turkey burgers are, you may need to cook them for longer. So even if they seem cooked, check just in case!

Here is the thermometer I use and what I would recommend:

Why use an air fryer?

There are several reasons why using an air fryer is the best choice. It really comes down to simplicity, speed and nutrition.

First, using an air fryer is super easy. Just preheat the air fryer (usually takes about 3-4 minutes), add the turkey burgers, and wait for them to be ready!

Next, the air fryer is so fast. They only take a few minutes to heat up and it cooks much faster than an oven and about the same time as on the stovetop. Plus, you don’t need to watch the burgers while they cook! Just stick them in an air fryer, wait for the beep to flip them over and then wait for them to be done.

Finally, you don’t need to use much oil when cooking in the air fryer, so they will be lower in fat and calories than pan fried turkey burgers. If you are trying to lose weight, air fryer turkey burgers could be a better option for you!

How should I store turkey burgers?

Once the air fryer turkey burgers are fully cooked, you can eat them right away or store them in an airtight container. They will last in the fridge for about 3-4 days.

You can also store them in the freezer if you want them to last longer! Separate the burgers with parchment paper and when you are ready to eat them, microwave them until the internal temperature is 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Recipe Notes

Flatten the patties before adding them to the air fryer to ensure they cook evenly.

Coat the air fryer in a thin layer of oil before adding the patties. I recommend an oil that has a high smoke point. I personally love canola oil and avocado oil.
