If you love caramel covered apples, but hate biting into one, these caramel apple slices are perfect for you. They taste just like a caramel apple, but the ratio of caramel to apple is even better, plus you get a nice crunch from the crunched nuts.

      Ingredients for Caramel Apple Slices

Before making these delicious caramel apple slices, make sure you have these simple ingredients:

      • Green apples: you can technically use any kind of apple but green apples tend to work the best, but they pair very nicely with the caramel.
      • Butter: a key ingredient in the caramel
      • White sugar: adds the sweetness.
      • Heavy cream: another important ingredient for the caramel.
      • Salt: I used kosher salt for this recipe and it turned out great.
      • Vanilla extract: really adds to the complexity of the caramel.
      • Nuts: any nut will work, I like using dry roasted almonds for this recipe.

I wouldn’t recommend any swaps for this recipe unless you have a specific allergy. For the caramel, you can potentially use coconut oil instead of butter, but the end product will have a different taste and texture. Other nut options include peanuts, cashews, pistachios, walnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans and hazelnuts.

How to make Caramel Apple Slices

Start by making the caramel. In a saucepan over medium low heat, add the sugar. Heat until melted, gently stirring the whole time. Once melted, remove from the heat. Add the butter and stir until melted. Next add the cream, salt and vanilla extract. Stir until well combined, then set aside.

On a cutting board, chop your nuts of choice into small pieces. Cut apples into half inch slices. Dip half of each apple slice in the caramel. Transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Sprinkle crushed nuts on top. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour then enjoy.

To avoid browning, coat the apple slices in a light layer of lemon juice before coating the caramel sauce and nuts. This will slightly alter the flavor, but will help reduce browning.

      Other topping ideas

If you don’t like nuts or want to add even more toppings to your apple slices, try out these other topping ideas:

      • Sprinkles, rainbow or chocolate
      • Coconut flakes
      • Crushed toffee
      • Grated ginger
      • Mini chocolate chips
      • Cinnamon
      • Orange peel
      • Crushed graham cracker
      • Mini marshmallows

      How to store the leftovers

You can store any leftovers of this recipe in the refrigerator. To avoid browning, try coating the apple slices in lemon juice before coating them in caramel. But, a little browning doesn’t hurt if you don’t like the taste of lemons.

If you choose to store them in the refrigerator, transfer them to an airtight container and separate each layer with parchment paper. They should last for around 2-3 days before they need to be thrown out.
