If you are stuck in the pasta with marinara rut, this recipe is a great way to make pasta while also getting in your veggies!

The bacon adds some really nice flavor and pairs perfectly with the pasta and peas. I used turkey bacon in this recipe but you can use regular bacon if you desire.

Ingredients for Pasta with Peas and Bacon

The ingredients for this pasta with peas and bacon recipe are pretty simple and you’ll likely only need to grab a few things from the store:

  • Pasta: any shape will do, I prefer spaghetti for this recipe
  • Frozen peas
  • Bacon: I used turkey bacon for this recipe
  • Onion
  • Garlic: I used minced garlic from the jar
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Lemon juice: ideally from a fresh lemon
  • Salt and pepper: to taste

The reason I like frozen peas over fresh peas is because they are more affordable, last much longer and maintain a good texture. There definitely are vegetables I prefer cooking from fresh (like zucchini, yellow squash, peppers), but frozen peas are one of the veggies I love cooked from frozen.

Tip: I recommend using yellow onions for this recipe!

Are frozen peas healthy?

Yes! One common misconception is that frozen vegetables are less nutritious than fresh vegetables. But this isn’t the case.

Frozen vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh, and in some cases, can be more nutritious since they are frozen before they have the chance to spoil.

One cup of frozen peas contains 125 calories, 23 grams of carbohydrates, 0 grams of fat and 8 grams of protein. It’s an excellent source of thiamine (vitamin B1), folate, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese and a good source of riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc.

Overall, frozen peas are a very nutrient dense food and contain more protein than you probably expected! Plus, they are pretty tasty (in my opinion).

How to make Pasta with Peas and Bacon

This recipe is pretty simple and easy to make. Plus, since frozen peas are pre-cooked, it’s pretty quick to make as well.

Step 1: Boil the pasta according to the instructions on the package. Drain and set aside.

Step 2: In a medium skillet, cook the bacon. Once crispy, remove the bacon from the pan and chop into small pieces.

Step 3: Add diced onions to the pan. Cook for several minutes, until onions begin to brown. Then add frozen peas and garlic and saute until peas are warmed through.

Step 4: Add the cooked pasta and bacon back into the pan. Gently fold all the ingredients together. Top with parmesan cheese.

Why is bacon added to this recipe?

Bacon adds so much incredible flavor to this dish! I personally used turkey bacon, but regular bacon works great as well.

I get my turkey bacon from Trader Joe’s and usually prefer it over regular bacon because it is lower in fat and higher in protein. The one I get has 0 grams of saturated fat and 6 grams of protein per slice.

Regular bacon is usually higher in calories compared to turkey bacon and contains more fat and less protein. That being said, there is nothing wrong with regular bacon and I still include it in my diet because it’s quite delicious.

For this recipe, I think either works well, but regular bacon will definitely add some nice grease and extra flavor if that’s something you are looking for!

How should I store this recipe?

If you have leftover pasta with peas and bacon, simply add it to an airtight container. It should keep in the fridge for about 3-4 days.

You can reheat it in the microwave or you can add it to a skillet and heat it up that way. Personally I think the leftovers turn out great either way.

And always remember to top it with some parmesan cheese!
