Ingredients of Salt and Chili Chicken

Before making this recipe, make sure you have all the ingredients you need.

      • Chicken breast: You can also use skinless chicken thighs if you prefer.
      • Soy sauce: I use the low sodium variety, but the regular stuff will do.
      • Sesame oil: Adds a really nice, almost nutty flavor.
      • Minced garlic: Fresh or jarred is fine.
      • White pepper: You can replace with black pepper if you don’t have any white pepper.
      • Cornstarch: Arrowroot starch will also work as an alternative.
      • Five spice: This adds some complex flavor, I wouldn’t recommend leaving this out.
      • Black pepper: Freshly ground is the best.
      • Salt: I use kosher salt.
      • Red chili pepper: Not to be mistaken for red bell pepper, you want the thin, spicy ones.
      • Green pepper: You can also use red or orange bell pepper.
      • Yellow onion: Or white onion.
      • Cooking oil: A neutral oil like canola or vegetable oil.

How to make Salt and Chili Chicken

Cut chicken into bite size pieces. In a medium sized bowl, add soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic and white pepper and whisk together. Add chicken pieces and marinate for 15 minutes.

Cut the green peppers and yellow onion into half inch thick slices and the red chili pepper into thin rounds. In a small bowl, combine the five spice, black pepper and salt. Use a fork to combine the spices.

Coat the marinated chicken in cornstarch. Shake off the excess cornstarch. In large pan over medium heat, add the cooking oil. Once hot, add pieces of chicken. Cook until browned and flip. Once other side is browned, transfer to a medium sized bowl.

In the same pan, saute the onions, green pepper and red chili pepper until softened and slightly browned. Once finished cooking, toss the chicken in the spice mix and add to the skillet. Toss all the ingredients together and enjoy.

Can I make this recipe in the oven?

Yes. You can either bake the chicken in the oven or fry the chicken in oil. If making in the oven, bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15-20 minutes (or until internal temperature has reached 165 degrees Fahrenheit).
