When making conversions, things can get complicated. Especially when you introduce imperial vs. metric conversions or want to convert from volume measurements to weight measurements. This guide provides an answer to how many cups are in a liter, as well as all your other conversion confusions.

How many cups are in a liter?
1 cup is equivalent to about 4 cups and ¼ cup. To be more precise, 1 cup equals 4.23 liters. Since cups are an imperial measurement and liters are a metric measurement, the numbers aren’t as clean as conversions within a particular system.
So, as an example, 4 cups of water is equal to 17 liters. To make this conversion, multiply the number of cups by 4.25 to get the number of liters.
It’s also important to note that there are a few different types of cups. What you’re probably familiar with is a US customary cup. But in nutrition labeling, a “cup” refers to 240 milliliters. This is slightly bigger than US cups.
To make it even more confusing, a “coffee cup” refers to a cup brewed with five ounces of water.
In this article, the type of cup I will be using is a US customary cup which is what is used for measurements in cooking and baking. But in order to make an accurate cup conversion, make sure you know what kind of cup you are converting first.
What is 1 cup equal to?
Now let’s get into some common conversions that are helpful to memorize if you frequently bake or cook. If you don’t want to memorize these conversions, you can always print out this guide and post it up in your kitchen for quick reference.
| 1 cup is equal to… | 16 tablespoons |
| 48 teaspoons | |
| 8 fluid ounces | |
| 237 milliliters | |
| 0.237 liters | |
| ½ pint | |
| ¼ quart | |
| 1/16 gallon |
What is 1 liter equal to?
Now let’s get into what one liter is equal to. As mentioned earlier, units like liters and milliliters are metric measurements, so the conversion to imperial measurements won’t be clean. If you cook recipes from countries that use metric units, this is a helpful chart to keep in your kitchen.
Please note that measurements were rounded up to make things simpler when cooking. That being said, some numbers may be slightly off due to the rounding.
| 1 liter is equal to… | 4 1/4 cups |
| 68 tablespoons | |
| 203 teaspoons | |
| 34 fluid ounces | |
| 1000 milliliters | |
| 2 pints | |
| 1 quart | |

Imperial System vs Metric System
Only three countries in the world use the imperial system, the United States, Liberia and Myanmar. This is perhaps because it’s not the most logical system for measurements (in my opinion). But old habits die hard and I don’t see these countries adopting the metric system anytime soon.
This system of measurements came from the United Kingdom, but they have since changed over to a different unit of measurement (the metric system).
Imperial measurements include length measurements (mile, yard, foot, inch), weight measurements (pound, ounce), volume measurements (tablespoon, cup, gallon) and temperature (Fahrenheit).
The rest of the world uses the metric system, which is a lot easier to understand and convert. Metric measurements include length (kilometer, meter, centimeter), weight (kilogram, gram), volume (cubic centimeters, cubic meter, milliliter, liter) and temperature (Celcius).
Helpful conversion chart
This quick conversion chart helps you convert from within the imperial system as well as to the metric system. Print out the conversion table below to keep in your kitchen to complete common conversions.
Please note that measurements were rounded up to make things simpler when cooking. That being said, some numbers may be slightly off due to the rounding.

Helpful conversion factors
If you are looking for a simple formula to convert from one measurement to another, these conversion factors are just what you need. The following chart makes conversions easy and to find the equivalent volume of any value.
To make an easy conversion, simply multiply the first column (ex. cups) by the conversion factor in the second column (ex. 0.24) to get the end product (ex. liters). For example, 3 cups times 0.24 equals 0.72 liters. And there are your volume conversion results.
Please note that some measurements were rounded up to make things simpler when cooking. That being said, some numbers may be slightly off due to the rounding.

How to measure liquid vs dry cups
Dry ingredients should be measured in measuring cups and spoons or by weight. Liquid ingredients should be measured in a glass measuring cup with a spout or by weight.
This is because liquid ingredients can be mismeasured due to the meniscus (curve) formed over the top of the measuring cup or spoon. With a glass measuring cup, measure liquid based on the bottom of the meniscus.
Why precise measurements are important
Accurate measurements are important when cooking, but especially when baking. Remember, whatever you are cooking or baking is going through many chemical reactions and changes. The quantity of certain ingredients can affect these reactions.
Ensuring you have correct measurements is one of the most important cooking skills to develop. For example, a packed cup of flour is going to be more ingredient than a loose cup of flour. This will affect the recipe.
While not every recipe requires exact measurements, eyeballing is fine, it’s still good to learn how to correctly and accurately measure ingredients.
Alternatives to volume measurements
If measuring using measuring cups and spoons is annoying, you can always use weight measurements to accurately measure ingredients. In fact, this is the best way to measure ingredients since it’s the easier way (less dishes) and the more accurate way.
All you need is a reliable kitchen scale, which you can find easily on Amazon or any home goods store. While you might be used to volume units, weight units really is the way to go!
